ACTED has been active in Uganda since May 2007, both in the northern region and Karamoja. In the North, ACTED supports the early recovery process with a specific focus on the needs of returning populations displaced by years of conflict. It also expands access, retention, equity and quality of primary education. In Karamoja, the focus is enhanced food security and resilience to disasters, especially droughts, as well as improving the primary education sector. ACTED focuses its intervention on strengthening livelihoods through improved resource management, conflict mitigation and capacity building. In Northern Uganda, as internally displaced persons (IDPs) have returned home and gained access to land, ACTED is working with farmers on infrastructure and capacity development to rebuild agricultural livelihoods. In the Karamoja/Pokot area, ACTED responds to severe food insecurity caused by the drought in the Horn of Africa, providing support to agro-pastoral communities to increase their purchasing power and protect their assets, reducing vulnerability to natural disasters. As part of its integrated cross-border strategy between Uganda and Kenya, ACTED maintains its community-driven disaster risk reduction (DRR) focus and promotes conflict mitigation to ensure peaceful and sustainable access to shared resources. In 2013, ACTED maintains a strong focus on this approach and looks at extending it further along the border with Kenya. ACTED continues working with community-level structures and initiatives such as the APFS, the CDMCs or the DEWS to continue building the communities’ resilience to disasters.

III. Position Profile
The finance intern works under the supervision of the Finance Officer and/or Country Finance Manager
His/Her responsibilities will be has followed:
• Control that operations respect existing financial procedures and manage accounting files for the Country Office; • Analyze financial data and create management indicators ; • Support Country Coordination through analysis of project running costs, follow-up on resource allocation, and finance training.

IV. Qualifications:
• Msc in Administration, Business Management or equivalent. • Finance and accounting skills required • Willingness to undertake serious responsibility and manage stress efficiently • Excellent communication skills, including advanced written and oral English.

V. Conditions:
Field Intern benefits include: a 300 USD per month living allowance, coverage of all accommodation, food, and travel costs, a luggage allowance of 50 kg., and the provision of medical, repatriation, and life insurance.

Enterprise specialist, Uganda - Uganda Jobs

RGENT: 10 week short term volunteer placement for an enterprise specialist based in Uganda
Background Through secure livelihoods, VSO aims to ensure that poor and marginalised people are able to access their right to a sustainable livelihood. VSO Uganda is currently developing a business plan with partners to develop a light engineering factory in northern Uganda that will seek to provide employment opportunities for youth benefitting from our livelihoods programmes and also contribute to the economic development of northern Uganda. As the Enterprise Specialist you will undertake market assessment in northern Uganda as part of VSO’s wider secure livelihoods programme development work.

What does the role involve?
Undertake a market assessment of northern Uganda in terms of light engineering products and agri-services, including:
• identifying appropriate sectors, products and markets that are suitable to the skills base of our target beneficiaries (youth who have received vocational training)
• identify and look at ways for overcoming the barriers and market failures preventing the target group from accessing value chains or gaining a greater share to them
• validate the research findings and proposed interventions with key stakeholders and produce a full written report, and to input into the development of the business plan for the factory • document the tools and processes used and train selected programme and partner staff on how to carry out market assessments.

Skills, qualifications and experience required
You’ll have a relevant degree in the field of Business Administration, Financial management or other related degree. You’ll have a minimum of 10 years working experience in enterprise/business development including the development of strategic plans, feasibility studies and business plans. You’ll need to work with minimum supervision, be able to explain complex ideas and have a high level of cultural sensitivity. Prior experience in developing counties is desirable, and ability to ride or willingness to learn to ride a motorbike would be useful although not essential. And the rest.... During your 10 week placement you’ll be based at the office in Gulu. In return, we’ll give you comprehensive financial, personal and professional support. We’ll provide you with extensive training before your placement, and our financial package includes a local living allowance, return flights, accommodation, insurance and more. When you return to your home country, we'll support you to resettle.

Program Director (Head of Mission) - Grassroots Reconciliation Group

The Grassroots Reconciliation Group (GRG) seeks a Program Director (Head of Mission) to head the office in Northern Uganda. GRG works on innovative peace-building and livelihood projects for the reintegration of former child soldiers and combatants. We are looking for a person with visionary ideas and someone who can take the lead in making the organization grow.
The Program Director (Head of Mission) will have the overall responsibility for implementation of programs in rural communities, as well as financial management, fundraising, and coordination with development partners and the local government.
Duties will include the following:
  1. Managing the office with 3-4 other permanent staff and 2-3 international and local volunteers.
  2. Managing livelihood and peace-building projects in 10-20 rural communities in northern Uganda, entailing weekly field visits. The job will be about 50% office-based and 50% field-based.
  3. Financial management, budgets, and cost control.
  4. Regular networking and outreach to other NGO partners, foundations, and other donors.
  5. Leading GRG’s monitoring, evaluation and learning system, providing regular reporting for internal learning, donors, and others.
  6. Working on grant proposals and fundraising activities.
  7. Setting up GRG projects in new locations.
  8. Supporting the design of projects and methodologies for field engagement.
  9. Supporting GRG’s communications strategy including blogging, video uploads, etc.
The Grassroots Reconciliation Group (GRG) helps former child soldiers and combatants in war-torn northern Uganda reclaim their future through locally designed projects with the twin aims of reconciliation and small-scale development. Building directly on a previous 3-year USAID reconciliation program, GRG projects bring together former combatants of the rebel Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) and local community members to plan out their own paths to reintegration and reconciliation. This involves a broad range of locally designed interventions, from livelihoods, to trauma support and peace-building activities. By supporting these projects, GRG encourages the long-term social and economic rehabilitation of the war-weary people of northern Uganda. Registered as a 501c3 non-profit organization, GRG has worked with over 1100 people since 2007, and currently works with over 600 people in 12 communities between Gulu and the border with South Sudan. Requirements: We are looking for a person with at least 2-3 years of experience with project management in a developing country (preferably in Sub-Saharan Africa), preferably with a background in conflict resolution and international development.
Key competencies:
  1. High degree of self-motivation and proven ability to work independently
  2. Project management skills, particularly on international development, livelihoods, and peace-building projects
  3. Good cross-cultural communication skills
  4. Good writing skills
  5. Knowledge of sustainable development issues and conflict resolution
  6. Grassroots community mobilization experience a plus.
  7. Knowledge of northern Uganda a plus.
  8. Excellent networker
  9. Proven fundraising experience, in particular on grants.
  10. Knowledge of multi-media, including web design, blogging, etc a plus
We offer a two year contract with initial salary of $1000-$1200 per month, depending on experience, along with health insurance. The Program Director will be expected to cover their own transport costs to the office in Gulu.
